18th-century Officer's Sword From The Old Regime
Swords of officers of the royal troops.
From 1750 onwards, attempts to standardize the service sword culminated in the regulations of 1767. This sword can be dated to this period.
It features an elegant musketeer-style hilt in gilded brass, with Prussian gilding (a special, slightly matte finish).
The pommel, guard piece, and shell guard (11 cm in diameter) are decorated with raised lines. The grip is filigreed, and the ferrules are simulated filigree.
The double-edged blade is 85.5 cm long and 3 cm wide at the ricasso. One side is engraved with "Vive le Roy" (Long live the King), and the other with the royal coat of arms featuring a fleur-de-lis.
This sword is large, at 105 cm, and could therefore have been used by either the infantry or the cavalry.
The engraving on the blade is slightly worn along the central edge, and the hilt is a little loose, likely due to the missing cloth or buffalo hide that was normally present. to protect the guard during insertion and removal from the scabbard.
