Model 1833 Boarding Saber
Model 1833 boarding saber, nicknamed "pot spoon" because of its shell-shaped sheet metal guard, entirely painted black for corrosion protection.
Thick blade, with a shallow sweep, single fuller, stamped on both sides with a marine anchor. The ricasso bears the star-marked B and G, the marks of Director Goupil and Controller Bisch. The back of the blade is engraved "Manfre Rle de Chatellerault Xbre 1845" for December 1845. It retains its counter-polished edge.
Wrap-around metal guard painted black.
Blackened leather scabbard without padding, with two brass mounts. The marine anchor is stamped on the reverse of the chape. As an interesting side note: these sabers were used in combat, but were also used to cut ropes. They are likely the origin of the expression "to settle the matter in two strokes of a pot spoon."
Good condition. Signs of wear consistent with age.
