18th Century Ivory Box, Bas-relief Wax, Cupid, Steel Beads
This spectacular lenticular candy box in fuchsia-tinted ivory is adorned with a brown wax bas-relief on a white background, under a domed glass, depicting Cupid and his attributes on a pedestal crowning a kneeling woman with flowers.
The intact domed glass is encircled with spiraled yellow metal and two lines of fine faceted steel beads. A third circle of faceted beads adorns the base of the box.
The beautiful natural material is tinted a vibrant pink! The base features a round reserve of its natural color. Inside, the back of the decoration is covered with sturdy cardboard.
The faceted steel beads are very lustrous with minor traces of oxidation.
There are a few dark spots consistent with age and use as a candy box.
Caution: firm closure; opening requires sliding a fingernail or a thin blade all the way around to create leverage.
SUPERB CONDITION, 18th century, circa 1780.
Diameter 6.7 cm, height 3.3 cm.
Weight 84 g
