"essex Crystal" Tie Pin, Jockey Gold And Mother-of-pearl, And Its Case, 1860
This superb Victorian era pin depicts a jockey and his horse jumping a stone wall. The scene is carved in intaglio on the back of a round crystal cabochon. The intaglio is painted from the reverse using the technique of fixed under glass: the details are applied first, then successively the other elements of the scene. These small works of art and tours de force of meticulousness are called "Essex crystal".
