"Animal Brooch, Dog Head, Silver Polychrome 19th Century"
This unusual and amusing brooch depicts a griffon dog's head in repoussé silver, painted in the style of Viennese bronzes. The motif is attached by two rivets to a vermeil plate supporting the fully functional C-shaped clasp.
Partial, illegible hallmarks on the clasp: Maker's mark in a lozenge, Boar's head (most likely). Minor wear to the polychromy on the most prominent areas.
Excellent condition, France, late 19th century, circa 1880.
