Brooch Mid 19th Century Silver-gilt And Egyptomania Enamels

Artist: Charles Templier
This superb example of Egyptian-themed jewelry from the 19th century is a brooch in silver gilt and enamels.
An oval motif of a head inspired by a sphinx wearing a scarab pendant in blood color on a black background in matte enamel on porcelain in a domed mount in silver gilt enameled champlevé with symbols inspired by Egyptian motifs: snakes, ibis, winged disk.
Egyptomania in the 19th century was initiated by the Napoleonic Egyptian campaign, then followed by the great interest provoked by the gift of the obelisk of Luxor offered by the Viceroy of Egypt Mehmet Ali to Louis-Philippe in 1831 and erected since 1836 on the Place de la Concorde. The jewelry and decorative arts of this period are testimony to this Egyptomania!
On the C-shaped hook of the pin, boar's head hallmark and manufacturer's hallmark C-symbol-T attributed to Charles TEMPLIER 1821-1890.

Excellent condition, very slight wear on the black background of the central plate.
Period 19th century circa 1850.
