Wax Case 17th Century Amethyst Vermeil And Antique Roman Intaglio
A very rare item! This beautiful sealing wax case is carved in amethyst, with columns and arcatures adorning the body.
The hinged lid is set with "wolf's tooth" claws typical of the early 17th century.
The top and bottom of the body are decorated with chased serrated palmettes.
Two rings attached to the body mount allow the case to be suspended.
A small antique intaglio on carnelian, depicting an unidentified mythological figure, is set into the base.
Intaglios quite similar in size and engraving style have been dated by specialists to the 3rd century CE.
Please note:
Missing and old repairs in some parts of the mounting. The intaglio shows a crack.
The lid closes well, the gilding of the vermeil is well present.
