Clock "equestrian Prestige" 1840
A large Charles X period clock, circa 1840. Made of mercury-gilt
bronze, patinated bronze, and silvered bronze, it depicts a seated
horseman. The figure wears a richly detailed ceremonial outfit: a high,
ribbed collar, epaulettes, a braided sash, chains and raised
decorations on the chest, as well as finely textured breeches. The hand
holding the gilt reins reinforces the impression of mastery and
display; the other hand holds a small stylized horn, a decorative
detail evoking the world of state or hunting.
The horse, shown in motion, displays a strong expression and clearly visible harness elements, notably the bridle and a gilt saddlecloth with an ornate border. The whole rests on a black rock with pronounced relief, enhanced with gilt appliqués: leaves and bouquets of foliage, as well as motifs and a lateral floral decoration. In the center, the circular dial has a finely textured background, Roman numerals, and blued hands. It is framed by a gilt border with scrolls, volutes, and foliage.
The stepped base is distinguished by its abundant molded decoration: friezes beneath the cornice, a central cartouche, acanthus leaves, and scroll feet. A clock with a strong decorative presence.
Original mechanism, unaltered: wire suspension; striking of the hours and half-hours on an antique bell.
