Clock The Young Woman In The Nest Watchmaker: Planchon
This elegant clock from the Napoleon III period, made around 1860,
bears the stamp on its mechanism "Planchon à Paris," a
clockmaker listed in Tardy's dictionary of French clockmakers. The
clock rests on an architecturally designed base of Carrara white
marble, with clean, balanced lines, highlighted by a twisted frieze of
gilt bronze. The circular white enamel dial, protected by a domed
glass, is set within a richly decorated frame adorned with finely
chiseled foliate scrolls. Its black enamel Roman numerals on a white
background offer clear legibility. It is surmounted by an antique vase
with scrolled handles, executed in the Neoclassical style, combining
gilt bronze and Carrara white marble elements.
To the right of the movement sits a finely gilt bronze female figure, the true expressive center of the piece. Depicted seated in a graceful and contemplative pose, she embodies an allegory imbued with gentleness and poetry. Draped in the classical style, the garment's treatment reveals a subtle interplay of supple folds that embrace the body with naturalism, demonstrating the high quality of the casting and chasing. Her slightly inclined torso and lowered gaze convey a meditative, almost maternal expression, reinforced by the delicate gesture of her raised hand. The young woman leans towards a nest containing fledglings, a symbolic motif evoking protection, renewal, or the cycle of time—a theme particularly suited to a timepiece. The figure's calm and protective demeanor lends the scene an intimate, narrative dimension, contrasting with the architectural rigor of the base and dial. The modeling of the face, with its soft, idealized features, as well as the fluid treatment of the knotted hair, testify to a Neoclassical influence still very much present in the decorative sculpture of the mid-19th century.
The combination of luminous gilt bronze and Carrara marble fully contributes to the precious aesthetic characteristic of the ceremonial clocks of this period. Thus, this clock combines sculpture, architecture, and horological art in a balanced composition where the female figure humanizes the mechanical object, transforming the measurement of time into a poetic and allegorical scene, emblematic of the decorative refinement of the Napoleon III era.
Original mechanism intact, without modification. Strikes the hours and half-hours on an antique bell, with a clear and authentic sound.
