Buddhist Prayer Altar Japan Edo Period + Stand / Buddha / Butsudan / Zushi
Large and beautiful Japanese prayer altar, called "butsudan", dating from the 19th century (Edo period 1603-1867).
It is presented on an later asian stand in red lacquered wood (H 91cm).
The butsudan is intended to venerate Buddha and Buddhist deities.
Opening with two doors decorated with gilded and chiseled brass, this butsudan in red lacquered wood reveals the representation of the bodhisattva Jûichimen-Kannon -- deity of compassion -- standing on a pedestal in front of a richly carved mandorla.
She wears a crown symbolizing her omnipresence. Her left hand holds a vase (kebyo) and the right, pointing towards the ground, makes the sign of fulfillment. Jûichimen-Kannon is one of the six large representations of the deity Kannon.
Very decorative set in good general state of preservation. Some wear and tear, small losses and restorations.
This collector's item is sold with its certificate of authenticity and a description of the work.
