Copper alloy temple panel showing Virabhadra South India 19th century This beautiful plaque of the god Virabhadra shows a lot of attention to detail. It is of embossed copper alloy:Virabhadra, an incarnation of Shiva, was created after Shiva's wife, Sati, was not invited to a great sacrifice given by her father Daksha. Sati, very humiliated, went to the banquet and threw herself on the sacrificial fire. When Shiva learned of his wife's death, he tore a hair from his head and threw it to the ground. Virabhadra, a great warrior hero, was born from this hair. In his rage he cut off Daksha's head and hurled it into the sacrificial fire. After the other gods calmed Shiva, Daksha's head was replaced by that of a goat or, in this case, a ram. Daksha later became a devotee of Shiva. Virabhadra is shown four-armed in this plaque in which he holds a sword or staff, a shield and two emblems which could represent a bow and arrow. It is located under an arch surmounted by a kurtimukha mask. Daksha, whose human head has been replaced by a ram's head, stands to Virabhadra's right, hands in anjali mudra. The figure to Virabhadra's left is Bhadrakali, Virabhadra's consort. His hands are also in anjali mudra.
