Icon Of The Annunciation, Mstiora School, Russia 19th Century / Virgin Mary / Archangel Gabriel
Superb and rare icon depicting the Annunciation circa 1850.
Its style, palette and great delicacy allow it to be attributed to the prestigious iconographic school of Mstiora in the Golden Ring region northeast of Moscow. It was there that some of the greatest iconographers of their time worked for the imperial court, the high clergy and the great aristocracy.
This composition is particularly interesting because the Archangel Gabriel is represented twice (side by side): On the left, he receives his instructions from God with his head slightly bowed and his hand on his heart. On the right, he announces to Mary in a gesture of blessing that she will give birth to Christ.
The icon is very finely executed in tempera in rich and warm tones.
It is of great elegance with slender, elongated silhouettes and very finely modeled drapes. The use of gold leaf also brings light, depth and wealth to the composition. Finally, the iconographer has taken particular care in the treatment of the architectural backgrount with color gradients.
In the borders, we find Saint Theodore on the left and Saint Eudoxia on the right.
Perfect original state of conservation.
This collector's item of great iconographic interest is sold with a certificate of authenticity and a complete description of the work. Dimensions: 31 cm by 27 cm.
