The work is signed Merio Ameglio in the lower left corner. Countersigned, located and dated on the back "Paris" "57". It is also titled "Le Vert-Galant" -- an expression now obsolete meaning in French very bold and enterprising with women -- in reference to the naughty nights of the famous cabaret and Pigalle.
The composition is dynamic, perfectly capturing the bustling atmosphere of Pigalle. The palette is rich and warm.
The painting is mounted in its original frame and is in very good condition with no restoration.
Merio Ameglio was born in 1897 in San Remo, Italy. A painter of the School of Paris, he lived in Montmartre and became known for the lively impressionist style of his urban scenes, as well as his landscapes and seascapes. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and received an honorable mention as early as 1938. In 1969, the Cambacérès Gallery in Paris organized a retrospective of his work. He died on July 29, 1970, in Montmartre.
