Large Bronze Sculpture Napoleon By Colombo, Cast Pinedo, Chicago World's Fair 1893 / Bust
Artist: Renzo Colombo
Important bronze bust of Napoleon I during the Russian campaign, signed "R. Colombo" (for Renzo Colombo) and dated 1885.
This superb and powerful representation of the emperor was casted by the renowned Parisian foundry Pinèdo for the 1893 Chicago Columbian World's Fair. These international events, which took place periodically in different countries, were a technical and artistic showcase of the highest know how of the time.
On Napoleon's left shoulder are several marks:
1/ The inscription "Exposition de Chicago" (Chicago Exposition) attesting that this sculpture was exhibited during this international fair.
2/ The "Bronze Garanti au Titre Paris" seal (Guaranteed Bronze).
3/ The foundry mark: "Pinèdo Bronzier Paris" — also found under the sculpture (see photo).
In the 19th century, the Pinèdo family was a dynasty of art founders particularly renowned for the exceptional quality of their works, which are now preserved in numerous museums in France and around the world -- including the Musée d'Orsay and Musée des Invalides in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Our sculpture is a shining example of the great refinement and outstanding crafmanship of the Pinèdo firm.
It is in perfect condition with a splendid brown patina.
This is, in fact, the most luxurious version offered at the time. Indeed, this bust was offered in several sizes—the largest, as seen here, was 57 centimeters high. Furthermore, the imperial eagle and its base were optional.
The sculptor Renzo Colombo, born in Milan in 1856, studied sculpture at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts before continuing his studies in 1878 in Florence and then in Genoa. He finally settled in Paris in the early 1880s and participated at the Paris Salon in 1883, 1884, and 1885 where he exhibited his famous sculpture of Napoleon. He became artistic director of the Musée Grévin in Paris in 1884 and died in 1885.
