Fine Russian icon of the Mother of God of Kazan, originating from the Volga region and dating from the late 17th century, with repaintings from the 18th and 19th centuries.

In this Byzantine-style composition, Mary bows her head toward her son, standing and blessing at her left.  Beautiful and tender expression of the Virgin Mary, inviting contemplation.

The icon is painted in tempera (paint made from egg yolk and natural pigments) on a double-edged wooden panel -- typical of 17th-century works. The chromatic range is warm in brown, red and beige tones.

Good overall condition with a beautiful patina. Lacks, cracks, wear and repaints consistent with the age of the work. The background was previously cleaned of its chromatic layer to reveal the gesso, an underlayer with an off-white appearance.
