Rare icon of the Archangel Saint Michael slaying Satan during the Apocalypse.
It dates from the beginning of the 17th century, around 1600/1650 and comes from the Volga region in Russia.
The crowned archangel wears his armor and mounts his winged steed. He pierces Satan with his spear, thus announcing the coming of a new world.
In Byzantine style, this splendid icon is finely painted with tempera (paint made from egg yolk) and the background is gilded with leaf.
