It dates from the first half of the 19th century -- around 1820/1840 -- and comes from the Volga region of Russia.
The composition is divided into two registers: At the top, we see Mary who, during her appearance in the Blachermes Church in Constantinople, extends her veil to humanity as a sign of protection. She is surrounded by saints, prophets and archangels.
In the lower part, the miracle of Saint Romanus the Melodist, called "the poet of Mary", is illustrated as well as the apparition of the Virgin to Saint Andrew the Fool for Christ.
The icon is delicately painted in tempera with great attention to detail. Several dozen figures are represented on an architectural background symbolizing the Blachermes Church.
Very well preserved with minor wear.
This icon is sold with its certificate of authenticity and a full description of the composition.
