Given its style and its great finesse, it is a work made in a Moscow workshop in the 17th century -- around 1640/1660.
It shows Saint John the Baptist in prayer, his head bowed, interceding with Christ to save humanity. He holds an unrolled parchment on which is written his request for mercy.
In Byzantine style, this icon is painted on a wooden panel with tempera (paint based on egg yolk and natural chilies). The color range is warm and the white background brings light and depth to the composition while highlighting the figure of Saint John. His expression is particularly soft and invites contemplation.
Good general condition with a beautiful patina. Some losses, cracks, wear and restorations which are consistent with the age of the work.
An old cutout at the bottom of the back of the wooden panel was made to allow an ex-voto to be inserted (see photo).
Dimensions: H 31cm by W 26cm.
