Helmet And Breastplate For A French Cuirassier, Cavalry Second Empire Napoleon
Spectacular helmet and cuirass set as worn by French cuirassier regiments during the Second Empire.
It consists of:
1/ A model 1845 troupe helmet of the 7th cuirassier regiment, dated 1847.
This type of helmet equipped cuirassier regiments under the reign of King Louis-Philippe (1830-1848), under the Second Republic (1848-1852) and throughout the Second Empire (1852-1870).
The bomb, visor and neck cover are in polished steel.
The rear of the bomb features the following regulatory markings:
1/ The number "7" attesting to an assignment to the 7th cuirassier regiment
2/ The number "47" for its date of manufacture in 1847.
3/ The cuirassier's serial number who wore this helmet: "629".
The crest is made of yellow copper. The front is decorated with a flaming grenade topped by a medusa head and a laurel wreath. The sides are decorated with gadroons, acanthus leaves and palmettes. It is topped with a stylized copper aigrette holder and an aigrette of scarlet horsehair.
The helmet also features its original black-tinted sealskin headband, which has retained most of its hair (85%).
Model 1845 chinstraps, with small rings mounted on black leather chinstraps. They are complete with their rosettes adorned with a radiant sun.
Long mane of black horsehair about 70 cm for the visible part.
The inside of the helmet consists of the original black leather liner and two original leather basanes covering the visor and the neck cover.
Beautiful and rare period plumeet with its wool olive, the whole in scarlet.
Very good condition with no oxidation. A small dent to the rear of the skull and discreet cracks to the crest. Wear of time to the headband and liner. The mane is an old one but has probably been changed. Plume holder replaced with a 1872/74 model.
Height of helmet -- without mane and without plume: 43 cm.
2/ A steel cuirass model 1855 in very good condition, with matching number.
This type of cuirass was worn by French cuirassier regiments during the Second Empire and the Third Republic – until 1914.
It consists of a breastplate and a backplate made of steel. Both bear the same serial number "3067". Manufactured by the Châtellerault factory in 1876. Same size and width.
The shoulder straps are made on brass and are mounted on leather.
At the rear, the shoulder straps are attached to the backplate with two brass plates.
At the front, they lock onto the breastplate with two rectangular brass locks.
Regulatory modification in 1891, essentially bringing the two shoulder straps closer to the central busk of the breastplate to enable a rifle to be shouldered more easily.
All leathers, including the belt, are original and in very good condition.
Very good condition overall with some trace of old oxidation.
Height of breastplate: 44 cm
