Gilded Icon Of The Annunciation, Moscow, Russia, 1834, With Its Period Gilded Frame
A rare and sumptuous vermeil icon depicting the Annunciation, created in Moscow in 1834.
It shows the Archangel Gabriel announcing to Mary that she will give birth to the Son of God.
This exceptionally elegant icon is a fine example of 19th-century Russian iconographic craftsmanship, combining graphic art and goldsmithing with precious materials such as gold and silver.
Delicately painted in oil on a wooden panel, it is embellished with a finely chiseled and repoussé gilded overlay—known as an “oklade” in Russian.
The icon bears the following hallmarks:
1/ Russian silver mark “84”.
2/ Moscow hallmark—Saint George slaying the dragon.
3/ The goldsmith’s initials “IT” in a rectangle.
4/ The inspector’s initials “ND” in Cyrillic with the date 1834.
The oklad is in perfect original condition with splendid gilding. It features in its upper part a stylized "cabochon" in white enamel indicating the name of the composition in Grreek: "Annunciation".
A rare, pristine, and untouched collector’s item.
The piece is sold with its also uncomon original frame finely made of gilded wood.
