Russian Icon Of The Mother Of God “eleusa” – Late 19th Century

Artist: -
A Russian icon depicting the Mother of God with the Child according to the famous iconographic model of the Eleusa (Madonna of Tenderness), characterized by the gentle contact between the faces of the Virgin and Christ.

Painted on a hollowed-out wooden panel (kovčeg) with a plaster ground and tempera paint, it features a gilded background and inscriptions in Cyrillic script: at the top, the traditional sacred abbreviations ΜΡ ΘΥ (Mother of God) and ΙϹ ΧϹ (Jesus Christ), while at the bottom there is a title in Church Slavonic.
