Antique Vietnamese Ceremonial Promotion Banner — Nguyễn Dynasty, Winter 1921

A rare and impressive antique Vietnamese ceremonial congratulatory banner, dating to Winter 1921, from the late Nguyễn Dynasty.

The large central inscription reads:

馬上錦衣 — “Splendid Robes upon Horseback”
A classical blessing expressing wishes for swift advancement in official rank and glorious honor.

This phrase was traditionally used to congratulate a newly appointed or promoted mandarin, conveying respect, prestige, and high social standing.

The right-side inscription gives the date:

啓定六年辛酉冬 — “Winter 1921 (Year Xin Dậu)”, late Nguyễn Dynasty.

At the top, an embroidered ceremonial procession is depicted, with attendants carrying banners and parasols — strong symbols of authority, dignity, and official status.

This banner would have been commissioned as a prestigious gift upon a mandarin’s appointment to a new post, reflecting loyalty, pride, and the social bonds within the community he served.

Width: 122 cm

Condition: Good condition, with natural wear to the silk consistent with age and ceremonial use.
