Antique Himalayan Carved Wooden Drinking Vessel Tankard, Nepal/tibet, 19th C

Antique Himalayan carved wooden drinking vessel from the Nepal / Tibet region, dating to the 19th century.

The vessel is carved from a single block of hardwood and stands 19 cm in height. It has a tall cylindrical form with slightly faceted sides and a solid integral handle. The exterior is decorated with bands of geometric carving including chevrons, triangular motifs and braided patterns arranged in panels around the body.

This is a particularly fine antique example. The vessel displays a wonderful deep patina from long use, especially around the handle where the wood has developed a rich, glossy surface from generations of handling. The carved decoration remains crisp while the high points show gentle wear consistent with age and authentic use.

Such wooden vessels were part of everyday life in Himalayan communities where they were used for drinking milk, butter tea or fermented barley beer. They were utilitarian objects but often decorated with simple yet confident folk carving.
