Its style, elegance and great finesse allow it to be attributed to a workshop in the "Golden Ring" region northeast of Moscow.
This elaborate composition illustrates different episodes from the life of the prophet.
In the center, Elijah crosses the Jordan River by miraculously pushing the waters away with his cloak. To the left, we see him living as a hermit in a cave in the desert. At the top of the composition, Elijah, called by God, miraculously flies to heaven in a chariot of fire drawn by winged horses.
In the Byzantine style, the work is painted in tempera with warm colors on a wooden panel. Beautiful gilding further enhances the halos of the saints, the wings of the angels, and the frame of the icon.
Very good original condition. Cracks and wear consistent with the age of the icon.
This collector's item is sold with its certificate of authenticity and a full description of the composition.
