"Joseph Jan Nuyen 1813-1839...large & Beautiful Seaside Landscape With Shipwrecked People"
Large and beautiful painting from the early 19th century, around 1830, which represents a seaside landscape in bad weather with a stranded ship and its castaways... The work is signed lower left with the monogram "WJ" / detail of photo 8... - a search from the web allows us to identify the Dutch artist Wijnand Jan Jospeh Nuyen (1813-1839): on the sale results sites, we can see that this painter made replicas with variants of his own paintings, and this theme corresponds well to another of his paintings sold at Christie's in 2008, on a smaller format / see last photo... The canvas offered here seems objectively of better quality because it seems more accomplished in terms of details, notably in terms of the elements surrounding the boat and also in the effects of sky and sea in the background... - note that photos of this painting were sent to a house sale in Paris (Drouot) which confirmed the attribution to this artist- note: examination with a Wood lamp (ultraviolet) shows old repaintings in the sky to correct two fine cracks (without real consequences on the quality of the work / piece of fabric on the reverse / see photo detail). Values & auctions: he is an artist who died prematurely at the age of 26, which does not prevent his works from arousing a lot of interest among collectors: his record at 85,000 euros was announced at Christie's Amsterdam in 2002 and in recent years we have noted more than fifty works sold between 3,000 & 72,000 euros / Source Art-Price.
