"Large 17th Century Canvas - To Be Restored - The Holy Family In The Carpenter's Workshop"
Large & remarkable biblical canvas "to be restored" which dates from the 17th century and which represents the Holy Family composed of the Virgin Mary, the infant Jesus and Saint Joseph, all working in their carpenter's workshop... The painting does not appear to be signed and has never been examined by an expert, but its quality suggests the presence of an excellent artist... Note: the artist constructed his theme according to a theatricalization which can be observed in the early works of Nicolas Poussin (15994-1665): in fact, his first way of painting consisted of placing the characters in the foreground of a painting, as on the stage of a theater... then at the level of chromatism, particular care was given to the faces, fabrics and expressions, while everything else was less elaborate or sometimes even plunged into semi-darkness... the objective being that the theme be immediately understood by the viewer of the painting, without his eye getting lost in unnecessary details... it seems obvious that the author of this canvas proceed in this way which is also observed in some great Spanish painters like Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682). Beyond its interesting construction, there is also a certain audacity on the part of the artist who shows here a "Holy Family" without the slightest halo, nor religious trappings, as if he wanted to humanize them through a simple scene of family work... Objectively it is great art! - plan a restoration to fill the gaps which are visible from the pictures: the restoration work is quite substantial but quite basic to be carried out by someone professional: it seems obvious that with a little care it is a work which will regain a very beautiful appearance - ask me for other pictures if necessary - Canvas size: 112 cm x 93 cm
