Original Baroque Chair Aachen-cork 5x, Rococo Dining Chairs (5x),
Set of 5 Carved Oak Rococo Chairs, Aachen / Liège Region, circa 1760–1780 Late Baroque Furniture · Solid Oak · Liège Rococo Style
A set of five dining chairs in carved solid oak, produced in the Aachen and Liège region circa 1760–1780, in the tradition of the Liège Rococo. The pierced back with three curved openings is crowned by a central floral medallion flanked by acanthus volutes in relief — a decoration characteristic of the regional Rhenish-Mosan style. Carved front rail with central floral motif. Cabriole legs with pad feet (pieds de biche). Seats upholstered in light blue damask.
The Liège Rococo — developed in the Meuse basin between Aachen, Liège and Maastricht in the mid-18th century — constitutes an autonomous cabinetmaking tradition, interpreting the French Louis XV idiom through a Germano-Flemish prism: more robust volumes, oak preferred over walnut, carved with characteristic vigour. Chairs of this type are represented in the collections of the Grand Curtius in Liège and the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen.
