"Rare Wedding Wardrobe In Solid Mahogany, Upper Normandy 18th Century."
Probably coming from Fécamp, this wedding cabinet with its decoration mainly of roses and doves is a rare example of port furniture from Upper Normandy made in American mahogany. Made in a Louis and hollowed out with a finely molded reserve, the high arched crosspiece is protrudingly sculpted with a crown of roses welcoming a pair of doves pecking each other, placed on the edge of a chalice, this decoration crowns two bases of leaves of acanthus, the decoration continues with roses adorning the bottom of the crosspiece, the whole is topped with a double vigneau cornice in the shape of inverted volutes. The doors are arched at the top, they are bordered by a protruding molding, they have two flat-banded panels, the upper and middle rails are scalloped, they are carved for the middle rail of a flowered wicker basket in a medallion and flowery branches in side reserves, the upper crosspiece takes up the flower patterning. Of very good manufacturing quality, the carpenter used wire mahogany for all the visible elements, uprights, crosspieces and side panels, he reserved beautiful speckled mahogany boards for the door panels, this precious wood with a very decorative appearance, highly appreciated by Parisian cabinetmakers for their luxurious production, plays with the light and enlivens the panels, reminding us of the decorative effects brought by the oak mesh traditionally used in the manufacture of beautiful furniture Norman. The bottom of the cabinet is neat, it is made up of 2 elements bringing together large crosspieces, molded intermediate uprights and panels, the whole in quarter-cut oak, it is this same flow offering a mesh wood that is used for the floor, the top and the 3 shelves. The 3 shelves are the original ones, they have a finished finish with a mahogany sheet, the intermediate shelf is equipped with 2 suspended drawers, also original, they are made of oak with a mahogany front, and are equipped with pull ring on rosette in embossed brass with lion's muzzle motif. Mahogany, a rot-proof wood of great density, can survive the centuries. Although the wood is very corrosive to cutting tools, it offers a deep color and above all allows for very fine sculpting work, as evidenced by the flower details. , well-detailed foliage and highly realistic basketwork. The cabinet is adorned with its original copper fittings and hinges, the hinges with turlupé vases and ribbed rings, the large entrances, cut out with a rooster's head. Original iron trunk lock that works with its period key. This piece of furniture is in a very good state of conservation, a few rare restorations have been carried out over time, the wood has beautiful colors, no discoloration and a beautiful patina.
