A Set Of Six Louis XV-era "reine" Chairs Made Of Painted Beech.

A set of six chairs with flat backs, known as “à la Reine,” from the Louis XV period, dating from the second half of the 18th century, made of molded and carved beech, formerly painted.

The backs feature a top rail in a softened “gendarme’s hat” shape, with a relatively narrow frame, leaving ample space for the upholstery. The exposed wood is accented by a fine molding that follows the contours of the back.

The side rails are scalloped on the sides and front. The slightly curved front rails feature fine molding that ends at the center with two small scrolls facing each other.

The four legs are arched and molded, ending in small carved scrolls at both the front and back.

Restoration and Upholstery
The six chairs underwent a complete restoration. They were completely disassembled, their joints reworked, refitted, and re-dovetailed. Various wood patches were applied, particularly at the ends of some legs.

The old reinforcement wedges were removed during the restoration. The undersides were intentionally left exposed, allowing one to observe the belt crossbars, the doweled joints, and the old traces of hand-carved woodwork.

The chairs were then repainted, as these seats had been painted from the very beginning.

The upholstery was completely redone, including preparation of the frames, installation of a jaconas, strapping, and construction of the seat pans to accommodate generous, removable seat cushions, which are covered on both sides.

The upholstery fabric is an “Indienne” from Casal, a contemporary reissue featuring a polychrome floral and foliage pattern on a yellow background. The backs of the chairs are lined with a small-checkered canvas.

All of the upholstery and covering work was carried out by Mr. Charlie Duc of the Des Goûts et des Couleurs workshop, located in the Aube department.

Thanks to this complete restoration, the six chairs feature sturdy frames and new upholstery, offering great seating comfort.

Fully restored and requiring no further work, they are ready for immediate use, particularly around a dining table.
