Neoclassical Console In Gilded Wood – Late 19th Century.
A charming Louis XVI style wall console, crescent-shaped, made in the late 19th century from carved and gilded wood. This console is a prime example of the Neoclassical style, with its clean lines and sculpted decoration inspired by classical architecture. It is topped with its original white marble, molded with a quarter-round molding and featuring small projections that perfectly follow the shape of the apron. The marble is of a good thickness and has a meticulous finish. The apron is adorned with a regular pattern of vertical channels, highlighted by gilding that alternates between matte and burnished (agat) areas. This matte/glossy contrast elegantly emphasizes the reliefs and demonstrates the careful decorative work typical of high-quality pieces from the late 19th century. The console rests on two tapered, fluted feet carved with long, stylized water leaves arranged vertically. Each foot is accentuated by a ribbon-shaped ring. The connecting blocks at the base, linking the feet to the semicircular stretcher, are adorned with small carved rosettes, while the apron joints feature larger rosettes, lending rhythm and balance to the whole. The semicircular stretcher is centered by a carved covered urn, a striking decorative element, fitted with Greek-style handles, reinforcing the neoclassical and architectural character of the composition. The original gilding, well-preserved, shows slight wear and small losses in places, the result of discreet, old repairs. The piece remains, however, very coherent, clean, and harmonious, with a beautiful patina, and comes directly from an estate, without any recent major restoration. Dimensions (to the marble base): Height: 87.5 cm Width: 78 cm Depth: 39.5 cm
