An elegant pair of bronze candlesticks with a brown patina, signed by the ornamental artist and sculptor Paul-Auguste Gagné (1824–1878).

Resting on a tripod base formed by powerful lion’s claws, these candelabra feature a rich decoration of stylized foliage, palmettes, and finely modeled ivy leaves. The shaft, designed with a botanical motif, rises elegantly to a lampshade inspired by the shape of oil lamps from Greco-Roman antiquity—a characteristic reference to the Neo-Greek style that enjoyed great popularity during the Second Empire.

The quality of the design and sculpture attests to the craftsmanship of Paul-Auguste Gagné, an artist active in the fields of artistic bronze and ornamentation. A contemporary document specifically mentions him for the “design and execution of the Chinese-style mount for a porcelain vase,” attesting to his work as a designer and ornamental artist within the Parisian decorative arts scene.

With their decorative vocabulary blending classical references, naturalistic foliage, and elegant lines, these candelabra perfectly illustrate the archaeological revival that characterized French decorative arts in the second half of the 19th century.
