Object description :

"Pair Of Louis XV Period Dressing Chairs. "
Interesting and rare pair of so-called "hairdressing armchairs", or dressing chairs, dating from the reign of Louis XV, around 1760–1770. Their shape, construction and certain carving details link them to a well-identified typology of intimate furniture in the 18th century, particularly intended for dressing rooms or boudoirs. The armchairs are made of walnut, formerly painted, with a natural patina of a beautiful effect. The decoration is both discreet and refined punctuated by carving work including stylized fan-shaped palmettes carved on the front connecting dice as well as acanthus leaves in high relief adorning the junction between the back and the armrests. The seats have just been carefully reupholstered, they are covered with a rich antique 18th-century style lampas, with gilded floral scrollwork on a garnet background, highlighted with a gold braid, in perfect condition. The hairdressing chair is a functional seat, designed to facilitate access to the hair during washing or styling. This function is reflected in several specific elements present on our chairs: -A low, open backrest, in a cabriolet shape, making it easier for the hairdresser to pass his arms behind the head. -A high crossbar of the backrest cut into a notch, allowing better clearance for the neck - a key element in the identification of this typology, mentioned in specialized works and observable on several preserved models (Louvre Museum, Mobilier National). -A wide, curved seat at the front, guaranteeing great comfort and good stability. This type of seat is notably listed in the Typological Vocabulary of Domestic Furniture by Nicole de Reyniès, and illustrated in public collections: - Louvre Museum, caned hairdressing chair, inv. OA 11330 (1715–1774) – Azay-le-Ferron Castle Museum, Louis XVI dressing chair – Mobilier national (similar chairs referenced in the repositories) Notable examples can also be found at public auctions: – Christie's, Louis XV or Louis XVI dressing chairs, attributed to Louis Michel Lefèvre or Antoine-Nicolas Delaporte, between 1730 and 1775.
