"Eugène Thivier (1845–1920) – Terracotta Group: Faun And Her Children "
Eugène Thivier (1845–1920) – Terracotta Group: Faun and His Children Elegant and vigorous group in patinated terracotta, representing a bearded faun seated, surrounded by his two young faun children playing and clinging to him. This mythological theme, very popular in 19th-century decorative sculpture, is treated here with remarkable vitality and great sensitivity. The bodies are nervously modeled, in a spiral composition with neo-baroque accents, evoking the legacy of Clodion. The work is signed "THIVIER" in the mass, for Eugène Thivier (Paris, 1845 – Paris, 1920), a French sculptor trained with Auguste Dumont, Pierre Loison and Gabriel-Vital Dubray. A brilliant student, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1865, becoming a member in 1888. His style oscillates between neo-classicism and symbolism, often inspired by mythology or allegorical visions. He is notably the author of the famous marble The Nightmare, kept at the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse. This terracotta is highlighted on an old carved stone base, which enhances the whole and gives it a museum-like aplomb. Dimensions: Height of the terracotta alone: 51 cm Total height with base: 64 cm Dimensions of the stone base: 35 x 35 cm Condition: Very good general condition, homogeneous patina, no missing parts. Stone base with beautiful patina of time.
