Large Mirror With Side Panels, Napoleon III Period – 19th Century.
A very elegant mirror with carved wood and gilt stucco frames, made in the 19th century in a particularly successful interpretation of early 18th-century styles. The piece presents a remarkably balanced composition, where the classical rigor inherited from Louis XIV and Regency models interacts with the freedom of Louis XV Rococo decoration. The frame is structured by a continuous, slightly raised band, around which are slender foliate clasps, formed of stylized acanthus leaves that seem to embrace and rhythmically punctuate the frame. This motif, directly derived from the decorative vocabulary of the early 18th century, gives the whole an elegant and perfectly controlled structure. The corners are richly adorned with openwork Rococo shells, accompanied by scrolling foliage and supple leaves, rendered with beautiful vivacity. These elements demonstrate a free yet respectful interpretation of the Louis XV style, with a particularly successful pursuit of movement and lightness. The glass panes are framed by a finely molded molding adorned with an interlacing beaded design, composed of a succession of elongated ovals linked by flowing scrolls punctuated with raised beads. This motif, inherited from classical ornamentation inspired by antiquity, provides a refined contrast between structure and decoration, and enriches the frame's visual appeal through a subtle interplay of rhythms. The pediment is one of the mirror's highlights. Entirely openwork, it unfolds into a composition of asymmetrical scrolls, slender volutes, and broad acanthus leaves, rendered with great lightness. Unlike some more massive 19th-century pieces, this one stands out for its airy and fluid character, evoking in places an Italian Rococo style, here interpreted with finesse and balance. The sculpture, of fine quality, features well-modeled volumes, crisp recesses, and highly legible motifs. The piece retains its original gilding, with a warm patina, and the wear and slight alterations consistent with age and use contribute fully to its authenticity. The glass panes are antique. This mirror captivates with its decorative presence, both rich and delicate, and with the precision of its stylistic interpretation. It is a very fine example of high-quality Napoleon III production, where the decoration is not merely applied but contributes to a true overall composition. Dimensions: Height: 150 cm Width: 110 cm
