Pair Of Louis XVI-era Candlesticks In Silver-plated Bronze.

This pair of silver-plated bronze candlesticks is characteristic of Louis XVI-era pieces, whose decoration draws inspiration from classical motifs.

Each candlestick rests on a circular base consisting of a plain plinth accented by a beaded frieze. It is surmounted by a bell-shaped base entirely adorned with radiating fluting. The baluster-shaped shaft features vertical fluting that extends onto the upper vase, ensuring continuity in the ornamentation. The top section follows the same lines, punctuated by a beaded frieze.

The entire piece is punctuated by several rows of beads, the diameter of which varies depending on their location. The most prominent friezes highlight the plinth, while rows of finer beads accompany the intermediate rings and the various moldings. This variation in size contributes to the visual balance of the composition and reflects a quest for proportion in the decoration.

The piece is constructed by assembling several elements. The base, the main body, and the spout are detachable. The main body, comprising the shaft and the vase, was made from two bronze half-shells cast separately and then joined by brazing, according to the methods traditionally used by foundrymen in the late 18th century. The assembly lines remain visible, particularly on the inside of the vase as well as at a few points on the exterior decoration, before being reworked during the chasing process.

The candlesticks were previously re-silvered. Today, they feature a uniform and lustrous silver plating that highlights the relief of the fluting and pearl friezes. They are in good condition, with the usual slight signs of wear associated with their age.
