“the Designs Of Love” – Large Plaster Sculpture With A Terracotta-style Patina – 19th Century

A large sculpture in solid plaster depicting Love, or Cupid, in the form of a young winged boy holding his bow and an arrow.

Depicted in a graceful and lively pose, he leans on his right leg, while his left leg is extended backward, the foot slightly raised. The movement of his arms, combined with the tilt of his head, lends the composition a beautiful sense of lightness.

His face, with its delicate features and a subtle, mischievous smile, is framed by a profusion of curly hair held back by a headband. Two wings with finely detailed feathers adorn her back. Her body, with its slender proportions and supple form, is partially covered by a piece of fabric tied at the waist, forming a light drape.

Cupid holds a plaster bow with a string in his left hand, while his right hand raises a wooden arrow, which he seems to be contemplating with a certain mischief.

This pose evokes the young god’s secret designs, for his arrows have the power to awaken passions and stir hearts. His smile leaves room for doubt: is he contemplating his next target, or is he already savoring the effects of his next shot?

With its elegant composition, gentle expression, and high-quality modeling, this work follows in the tradition of 19th-century French decorative sculpture.

The plaster features a lovely terracotta-like patina in shades of pinkish ochre, overlaid with a lighter patina in slightly grayish tones. This warm, nuanced finish highlights the sculpture’s reliefs and details.

The piece rests on a circular plaster pedestal, set upon a modern quadrangular base made of weathered wood.

This unsigned work shows some minor historical restorations and signs of wear but retains its beautiful decorative appearance.

19th-century work; proposed date.
