Rocaille Mirror Made Of Wood And Gilded Stucco, Decorated With Birds And A Gallant Trophy, 19th Century.

This wall mirror features a deeply scalloped silhouette, characteristic of the Rocaille style. Its frame, crafted from wood and gilded stucco, displays a particularly elaborate design, the contours of which are faithfully mirrored by the original mirror pane—which is entirely scalloped and accented by a wide bevel around its edges. The whole forms a harmonious composition in which the outline of the mirror precisely follows that of the frame.

The decoration combines a rich ornamental vocabulary inherited from the 18th century. Large asymmetrical shells, rocaille scrolls, acanthus leaves, naturalistic flowers, and various foliage motifs are arranged in a composition that alternates between solid and openwork sections, creating a play of light that visually lightens the overall effect.

The crown is adorned with a gallant trophy consisting of a bow, a quiver filled with arrows, and a flaming torch. Borrowed from the iconographic repertoire of Cupid, these attributes are among the decorative motifs most frequently used in 18th-century rocaille ornamentation before being revived by 19th-century artists as part of the revival of historical styles.

Two small birds, rendered in the round, are positioned on either side of the upper decoration. Entirely raised from the background, they appear to be perched on the volutes, adding depth and a naturalistic dimension to the composition. This treatment, relatively uncommon on this type of mirror, contributes to the quality of its craftsmanship.

The Rocaille style experienced a significant revival during the 19th century. Beginning with the July Monarchy, spurred by Louis-Philippe and the major renovation programs for the royal residences, the decorative arts rediscovered the models of the reign of Louis XV. Ornamentalists, sculptors, bronze casters, and mirror makers then reinterpreted this decorative vocabulary, a movement that would continue throughout the 19th century.

The mirror retains its original leaf-gold gilding, displaying an antique patina and slight signs of wear consistent with its age. The original, fully beveled glass is also preserved. The piece is in good condition, with a few discreet historical restorations, typical of this type of work.
