"Polish Bed, Southern Work, Louis XVI Period. "
Rare and interesting model of a Polish-style bed in molded and carved walnut, painted in soft green, southern work from the end of the 18th century. The bed rests on four fluted and rudenté uprights, topped with pine cones in the geometric treatment typical of regional productions. The crosspieces are decorated with canework – a decoration more readily found in Lyon and the Midi than in Parisian models – and the tapered legs end in high solid caps, clearly more developed than in Parisian productions. The circular canopy trimmed with textile is supported by two arched arms in wrought iron, screwed to the headboard and the canopy: a rare and ingenious system which constitutes a provincial variant of the polonaise. The canopy is also adjustable in height by plus or minus 5 cm. This bed is complete, with its period bed base retaining its original straps (narrow straps typically from Lyon). All its assembly screws, curtain rods and canopy support bar are also period. The wood is in perfect condition, the whole is sound. It comes from a property in Lyon, located about thirty minutes from Lyon, which has remained in the same family since the mid-18th century: it was therefore most likely made in the Lyon region, for the ancestors of the former owners. The wood has been repainted in a slightly patinated vegetable green. The textile upholstery has just been custom-made, using old quality English manufacturer fabrics (the house was bought by Pierre Frey) in fresh colors (curtains, valance and bedspread). A new 27 cm thick mattress is supplied with the bed. Fully disassemblable, this bed can be placed sideways, against a wall or in the middle of a room, all its sides being finished and decorated. Dimensions: Length: 203 cm Width: 130 cm Bedside height: 128 cm Bed height: 64 cm Total adjustable height: 282 to 287 cm Bed: 120 × 190 cm Rare piece, complete and of beautiful provenance, witness to the southern interpretation of Louis XVI models, possibly from a Lyon workshop.
