Carved And Gilded Wooden Console Table In The Louis XV–louis XVI Transitional Style, 19th Century.
A carved and gilded wall-mounted console table, crafted in the style of Parisian designs from the transition period between the Louis XV and Louis XVI eras.
With its dynamic form, it rests on two strongly curved legs featuring a double curve. The openwork band is centered by a large pleated ribbon bow, the ends of which fan out on either side and terminate in fringed tassels inspired by passementerie.
Hanging from the central bow are long garlands of laurel leaves that cascade in festoons, pass through the openwork sections of the structure, and intertwine with the uprights. This sculptural motif continues along the sides of the belt, where the ribbon pattern is repeated and accompanied by new garlands of laurel leaves suspended within the openwork.
The upper portions of the front uprights are adorned with cascades of overlapping water-leaf bases that decrease in size. The legs terminate in inward-curving scrolls, preceded by acanthus leaves enveloping their bulge and rising up along the uprights, extended by leafy twigs.
The two legs are joined by a dynamic crossbar, centered with an openwork foliage motif around which a laurel garland intertwines, forming a hanging festoon before rising up on either side of the crossbar.
The entire decoration is carved from wood. The composition combines the still strongly curved lines inherited from the Louis XV style with the ribbon bows, garlands, and laurel wreaths characteristic of the return to classicism. It thus draws on the design vocabulary of Parisian consoles from the Transition period, around 1765–1775, with comparable compositions found notably in the work of the cabinetmaker Edme Chollot.
The console is topped with a veined white marble top, featuring a dynamic shape and molded with a “bec-de-corbin” edge.
An old label from a Bordeaux store is preserved inside the band.
The console retains its original gilding, which shows signs of wear, a few small chips, and occasional minor touch-ups.
