José Lujana Casanova was born on August 21, 1933, in Valencia, into a very modest family. At the age of ten, he was given a metal box of watercolors, and later he managed to acquire some tubes of oil paint with which he created his first paintings. At only 13 years old, he held a solo exhibition in the Valencia Press Association hall. He studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts and worked in the restoration workshop of Rafael Vañó Marqués, where he acquired solid technical training and great mastery of the craft. In 1952, he won second prize for painting at the 8th Provincial Exhibition of Education and Leisure Art, and in 1953, third prize at the same competition. After marrying in 1956, he devoted himself entirely to fan decoration and painting. In 1978, he won first prize for painting from the Cullera City Hall. He developed various styles ranging from realism, impressionism, hyperrealism, romanticism, and post-romanticism, focusing on historicist, mythological, and biblical themes. In some of his paintings, the costumbrista taste of the late 19th century was noted. He died in Valencia on June 24, 1989. His work is represented in numerous Spanish and international institutional and private collections. Some of his exhibitions included: 14 Post Office Street, Valencia, 1946; Press Association Hall, Valencia, 1947; Ségrelles Gallery, Valencia, 1974; and Murillo Art Hall. Seville, 1978.
