"Chasseur On Foot Of The 23rd Battalion By Oscar Lahalle"
Painting on porcelain by Oscar Lahalle representing a hunter on foot from the 23rd battalion around 1875, signed lower left. The man is filling his pipe. He is in winter country clothes with a flannel belt and a greatcoat. He is armed with the Gras rifle and wears the distinctive green and daffodil of the Légère. He is wearing the taconet Mle 1872.On the back of the tile is an inscription, which seems to correspond to a dimension: "16 by 27 1/20".
Oscar Lahalle: born in Laxou in 1833, Charles Dominique Oscar Lahalle was initially destined for a military career and became a student at the Saint-Cyr school. An officer under the Second Empire, he took part in the Italian campaign (1859-1862), then in the Mexican expedition as captain of the General Staff to Marshal Bazaine, then colonel of the 42nd Infantry Regiment (1862- 1867). Lahalle then turned to an artistic career, as a painter. He specialized in the representation of military scenes and exhibited in Paris from 1868 to 1900. He died in Paris in 1909.
