18th-century Thai Buddha

18th-century Thai Buddha.

Bronze or metal statue depicting a crowned Buddha in a seated position.

Traditional Thai art from the Ayutthaya period (17th–18th centuries) or regional styles such as that of Lan Chang.

The figure is depicted in the meditation posture (Dhyanasana), with the hands arranged in the Dhyana mudra (meditation gesture).
• Attire and adornments: This is a “crowned” or “adorned” Buddha ” (Phra Phuttha Song Khrueang), adorned with a rich pectoral pendant (necklace), arm bracelets, and either a tall conical ushnisha or a multi-tiered crown.
• Base: The figure rests on a traditional pedestal, either openwork or stepped, characteristic of bronzes intended for devotional altars in Southeast Asia.
• Style: The facial features, the shape of the crown, and the elaborate pectoral ornaments closely resemble metalworks from the historical Thai Buddhist tradition, originating from central Thailand (Ayutthaya) or neighboring Theravada traditions.
