Cinquedea Sword From Northern Italy (15th–16th Century)

Northern Italian Cinquedea Sword (15th–16th century)

The guard consists of curved quillons made of brass or bronze, decorated with engravings. The hilt consists of ebony plates that reveal the tang; the pommel, also made of brass or bronze, features the same engraved motif. The rosettes are also made of brass, and the hilt has been assembled with great skill, without a single rivet.

The double-edged blade features a hollowed-out section (central groove) that gives it great strength. This style, which is not typical of the classic “cinquedea,” is more akin to that of another very specific weapon of this period: the “stocco .”

At the base of the blade, there are remarkable engravings on both sides, depicting, in particular, what appear to be demonic and religious figures.

The blade has retained an excellent edge, and the sword is very well balanced.

Its overall condition is worthy of a museum piece; this is undoubtedly a weapon intended for a high-ranking figure.

A piece very rarely found on the market, inviting admiration for the talent of the Italian artisans and armorsmiths who contributed to the creation of this true work of art.
