16th–17th-century Dagger

16th–17th-century dagger

A magnificent damascened dagger from Spain.

Spanish damascened (or damasquinado) daggers are highly prized works of art, in which precious metals such as gold and silver are inlaid into blackened steel. Primarily crafted in Toledo and Eibar, these handcrafted weapons blend ancient Moorish techniques with Spanish swordsmithing, often featuring arabesque or Renaissance motifs of great finesse.

The dagger’s hilt is adorned with superb gilding and engravings.

The engravings depict floral motifs and mythical creatures.

The dagger underwent cleaned and preservation work in the 19th century.

A true work of art, worthy of a museum.
