Japanese Yoroi Armor From The Edo Period, 18th Century.
Japanese Armor (Yoroi) from the Edo period.
Circa the 18th century.
A complete set of *ni-mai-dō-gusoku* armor, of great elegance and high quality. The set is perfectly coordinated, featuring black lacquer and blue silk cords; it is presented complete, as shown.
The *suji-bachi*-style helmet (*kabuto*) incorporates elements inspired by the ancient *ō-yoroi* style. It consists of 36 iron plates lacquered in black and brown, adorned with *shinodare* and a finely decorated *tehen-kanamono* (ornament at the top of the helmet), accented with gold and *shakudō*. The neck guard (*shikoro*) consists of five rows of *kiritsuke-kōzane* (lamellae imitating individual scales); the bottom row is covered with embossed leather (*e-gawa*) and edged with a gold trim (*fukurin*), as is the visor (*mabizashi*). Above this is a richly decorated horn mount (*kuwagata-dai*), topped with a gilded emblem and featuring a circular motif (*kasa-zurishi*) at its center. The wide side flaps (*fukigaeshi*), in the *ō-yoroi* style, are also adorned with embossed leather (*e-gawa*) and a gold border (*fukurin*).
The face mask (*menpō*) is made of *neri-gawa* (compressed cowhide covered with eight layers of black lacquer) and adorned with a boar-bristle mustache. It features a throat guard (*yodare-kake*) composed of five plates, the last of which is decorated with embossed leather (*e-gawa*) and edged with a gold trim (*fukurin*).
The breastplate (*dō*), designed in two parts (*ni-mai-dō*) and shaped to fit the body, is lacquered black. It is complemented by protective panels (*kusazuri*) formed of five rows of *kiritsuke-kōzane*, the ends of which are adorned with embossed leather (*e-gawa*) and a gold border (*fukurin*).
The wide shoulder guards (*ō-sode*), also made of black-lacquered *kiritsuke-kōzane*, feature edges decorated with embossed leather (*e-gawa*) and a gold trim (*fukurin*). They are fitted with traditional metal ornaments (*kogai-kanamono*), including fastening rings; these elements are made of *shakudō* with gilded details, among which is the owner’s family crest (*ka-mon*).
The arm guards (*kote*), lined with silk, consist of chain mail (*kusari*) sewn to the upper arm, while the forearm is protected by closely spaced iron plates. The shin guards (*shino-suneate*) are made in the same style. The thigh guard (*haidate*) is lined with small black-lacquered iron plates arranged in a scale pattern (*kawara-haidate*).
The set includes two carrying chests (*yoroi-bitsu*). They come with their original leather covers, adorned with the owner’s *ka-mon* (family crest), painted in gold. The internal wooden frames, which had disintegrated, were faithfully reconstructed to fit the period covers.
