Kuba—also spelled Quba or Guba—refers to a major weaving region in northeastern Azerbaijan. Pieces from this school are distinguished by the clarity of their designs: geometric shapes, medallions, and stylized motifs are arranged with precision. It is in this balance between the rigor of the composition, the richness of the details, and the subtlety of the colors that the character of Kuba’s weavings is revealed.

On this piece, the eye follows a series of large diamond-shaped medallions that stretches across the center of the kilim. Smaller motifs are interspersed among them, lending rhythm to the composition. On either side, indigo-blue bands, punctuated by angular orange and red shapes, frame the central field. The ivory and red borders further accentuate the design. The piece spans just over four meters in length: this scale lends the composition a truly spectacular effect, enhanced by the intensity of the reds, indigo, orange, brown, and ivory.

The weave is extremely fine, precise, and even. For a piece of this length, it is surprisingly light and supple. A wool-on-wool weave, of course, but executed with masterful skill.
