18th Century English Queen Anne Low-boy Side Table In Quarter-sawn Oak

Queen Anne Low-Boy side table in quarter-sawn oak, England, 18th century

Side table that can also serve as a small desk. Provincial work in the Queen Anne style. Structure made entirely of solid oak. The wood is quarter-sawn, making the medullary rays very visible, especially on the top and on the drawer front. Period: late 18th / early 19th century.

Rectangular overhanging top with straight edges. Frieze fitted with a single drawer taking up the full width. Lower apron of the front and sides cut out and strongly shaped.

Traditional frame construction with mortise and tenon joints. Protruding wooden pegs visible on the uprights. Drawer assembled with irregular hand-cut dovetails.

Brass hardware in repoussé: two drop pull handles on shaped backplates and a matching central dummy escutcheon. No lock mechanism or key.

Base formed by four curved corner legs, ending in rounded hoof terminals, the typical shape known as "pad feet".

Good overall condition. Signs of use on the top: light scratches and superficial marks, inherent to its age. Secondary wood naturally darkened by time. Small splits in the oak, of no consequence. Small loss at the right end of the brass backplate of the left handle. Top very slightly warped, only noticeable with the eye level with the surface, with no effect on use. Beautiful old, deep waxed patina.
