Large Pair Ewers 61cm Of Wedgwood And Gilt-bronze
ORDERING AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM OUR WEBSITE
A magnificent and imposing pair of decorative ewers from the Napoleon III period, circa 1860–1880, remarkable for the elegance of their proportions, the richness of their ornamentation and the refinement of their materials. Crafted in finely chased and gilded bronze, combined with sumptuous blue Wedgwood-type ceramic bodies, they draw direct inspiration from the artistic repertoire of Greco-Roman Antiquity. Their slender silhouettes are enhanced by spectacular sculptural handles, crowned with winged griffins bearing dragon-like heads, fantastic creatures evoking power, vigilance and protection.
This composition of great decorative nobility perfectly illustrates the Second Empire’s taste for prestigious ornamental objects combining mythological references, Neoclassical inspiration and the virtuosity of the decorative arts. Each ewer rests on a broad gilt-bronze spreading foot, richly adorned with finely chased acanthus leaves and botanical motifs. The pear-shaped body, in a delicate matte blue, features charming white relief decorations in the antique manner, depicting draped female allegorical figures in Greek-style garments, bearing floral wreaths and baskets of offerings, accompanied by laurel garlands tied with ribbons. The contrast between the deep blue, the whiteness of the figures and the lustre of the gilding creates a remarkable chromatic harmony. The necks rise into graceful, widely flared pouring spouts, while the large, sweeping handles, decorated with foliate scrollwork, ribbons and winged creatures with outstretched wings, demonstrate exceptional chasing and a particularly sophisticated approach to ornamentation.
A superb pair of ceremonial ewers, distinguished by their imposing scale, the delicacy of their decoration and the originality of their composition. True objects of prestige, they form an exceptionally elegant decorative ensemble, ideal for enhancing a refined interior, a collection of 19th-century decorative arts or a distinguished display, bearing witness to the splendour and artistic craftsmanship of the Napoleon III period.
