Snuffbox Featuring A Portrait Of Emperor Alexander I. Morel. First Quarter Of The 19th Century
An elegant circular tabletop snuffbox from the first quarter of the 19th century, made of Karelian birch and veneered with natural tortoiseshell. The lid is adorned in the center with an inlaid gilded brass medallion depicting a profile portrait of Russian Emperor Alexander I (1777–1825). The circular inscription “ALEXANDER. I.” surrounds the portrait, while the signature “Morel” appears at the bottom of the medallion, identifying its maker. This type of commemorative snuffbox enjoyed great popularity in Europe following the fall of Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna, a period when Alexander I was regarded as one of the principal architects of the restoration of the European political balance. The combination of Karelian birch with its striking natural grain, precious tortoiseshell, and a gilded brass medallion elegantly exemplifies the decorative arts of the Empire period.
