A Finnish Navy Officer's Ceremonial Sword. E&f Hörster Solingen.

This Finnish Navy officer’s ceremonial saber, made between the second quarter and the middle of the 20th century, is a remarkable example of the ceremonial weaponry of the Finnish Navy. Its elegant silhouette and the quality of its craftsmanship combine the characteristics of a service weapon with the distinction of an officer’s insignia intended for official ceremonies.

The slightly curved, single-edged steel blade bears the mark of the renowned German manufacturer E&F Hörster, Solingen, one of the leading European producers of military and ceremonial weapons in the 20th century. The hilt is made of gilded brass with black fluted scales. The openwork guard is adorned with the heraldic lion of Finland, the national emblem of the Finnish state, while the pommel is topped with a finely carved lion’s head, emphasizing the official nature of this weapon.

The stitched leather scabbard is fitted with a gilded brass mount featuring two suspension rings. The understated elegance of its decoration, the balance of its proportions, and the quality of its craftsmanship make it a representative example of the parade sabers used by Finnish naval officers in the mid-20th century.
